How the Data Actually Flows

When you upload a PDF, PdfMeta reads the text out of it locally in your browser using PDF.js — the original PDF file itself is never uploaded anywhere. Only the extracted text, plus whatever question you type, is sent to PdfMeta's server, which forwards it to OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini model to generate an answer. The file you uploaded stays on your device throughout.

Because the AI can only answer from text it can read, a scanned PDF with no selectable text layer won't work here — run it through PDF OCR first to add a text layer, then come back and chat with it normally.
